Kibeho Pilgrimage in Rwanda is a deeply spiritual journey. It centers on a series of visions of the Virgin Mary to schoolgirls in the early 1980s. The Catholic Church officially recognized those apparitions in 2001, making Kibeho the only Vatican-approved Marian apparition site in Africa. Over two days we will travel from Kigali to Kibeho, a drive of about 150 km (roughly 3–4 hours).
This tour includes all transport, overnight stay, and meals. Pilgrims will visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Kibeho (Our Lady of Sorrows), attend Mass and prayers, and reflect on the messages of the apparitions. Local guides share the history of Kibeho and its call for faith and reconciliation. The focus is on prayer, reflection, and learning about this sacred site.
We pick you up early in Kigali after breakfast and begin the drive south. The road winds through green hills toward Butare (Huye) where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon, we arrive at Kibeho village. We join any prayer service or Mass at the shrine and then tour the sanctuary. You will visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Kibeho (also called Our Lady of Sorrows). Here, the Virgin Mary appeared to three schoolgirls. The guide will explain the 1980s visions and their call to pray and repent. See devotional statues on site, including one of the Merciful Jesus. In the evening, we transfer to a local guesthouse or hotel for dinner and an overnight stay
After breakfast at the hotel, we return to the shrine for morning Mass and prayer. The setting is peaceful, a time for reflection. You can pray the Seven Sorrows Rosary here or walk the Stations of the Cross if available. Later, we visit the Kibeho Secondary School grounds where the apparitions took place. Pilgrims often spend time in the schoolyard in silent prayer. After a lunch break in Kibeho town, we begin the drive back to Kigali. Expect to arrive by late afternoon. The tour ends at your hotel or the airport.
