On this 2-day gorilla safari Uganda and Rwanda tour, you start in Kigali (Rwanda) and drive into Volcanoes National Park to visit the Karisoke Research Center founded by Dian Fossey. Then you cross into Uganda at the Cyanika border and head to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. There, you trek to see mountain gorillas in the wild for one hour. The package includes gorilla permits, guided trek, mid-range lodge, and meals. It is perfect for solo travelers, couples, or families. You return to Kigali at the end, but you can extend your trip if you wish.
On this gorilla safari Uganda trip you will get face-to-face with wild mountain gorillas. In Uganda’s Bwindi Forest, you spend up to one hour with a habituated gorilla family. Rangers keep you a safe 7 meters from the gorillas. This is the high point of the tour.
We also visit historic sites. In Rwanda, you drive to the Karisoke Research Center set up by Dian Fossey. There you can learn about Fossey’s work protecting gorillas. Near Volcanoes Par,k we stop at the Iby’Iwacu cultural village (Gorilla Guardians Village). Here, you can see how local people live alongside the gorillas.
You begin in Kigali, Rwanda. After breakfast, drive north to Volcanoes National Park. The road is about 104 km and takes roughly 2–3 hours. First stop is at the Karisoke Research Center (Volcanoes NP). Dian Fossey founded this camp in 1967, and you can see her gravesite and museum. Tour the site to learn about gorilla conservation history.
Next, you cross into Uganda. The best crossing is the Cyanika (Rwanda) – Kyanika (Uganda) border. This route is quieter and scenic. Be ready for the visa check and paperwork. The crossing usually takes 30–45 minutes. After formalities, you drive into Uganda’s Kisoro district. You may stop by the Gorilla Guardians Village or local viewpoints on the way. Finally arrive at your lodge in Bwindi (near Ruhija or Nkuringo sector). Enjoy dinner and rest; the gorilla trek is tomorrow.
Start very early (by 6:00 AM). Have breakfast and drive to the Bwindi park office. You join a ranger briefing about park rules and gorilla behavior. Then, enter the forest at around 8–9 AM with a guide and porters. Trek through the jungle for 1–6 hours, depending on the gorilla location. The hike can be steep or muddy, so hiking boots and a walking stick help.
When you find the gorilla group, you spend one hour with them. Stay quiet and keep at least 7 meters away. This close encounter is unforgettable. After the hour, you return to the trailhead and pick up your gorilla trekking certificate. Finally, drive back to Kigali via the same border (Cyanika or Katuna). You arrive in Kigali in the evening. Drop-off can be at your hotel or the airport.
You can end your tour in Kigali or extend it. For example, you might spend extra days in Uganda to see Queen Elizabeth NP or Lake Bunyonyi, or explore more of Rwanda.
The driest months are June–September and December–February. Roads and trails are easier then. However, gorilla treks run year-round. Even in rainy season (March–May, October–November) you can go, but expect muddy trails.
By official rules, children 15 years and older can trek. In Uganda, 12–14 year-olds may be allowed with special permission. Park staff will assess fitness of younger kids. Many tours recommend age 15+ due to trek difficulty.
Bring sturdy hiking shoes or boots, long pants and a light long-sleeve shirt, and a rain jacket. Also pack sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and sunglasses. Carry a daypack with water (at least 2 liters), snacks, and any personal meds. A camera is useful, but keep flash off around gorillas.
Yes. Both Rwanda and Uganda require a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Carry the card with you.
In Bwindi you may spot monkeys (black-and-white colobus, red-tailed), duikers, and many birds (200+ species). The forest is rich with butterflies and orchids too. The focus is gorillas, but the walk is full of jungle life.
The trek can be moderate to strenuous. You hike through steep, slippery forest trails for several hours. It’s best if you are in good shape. Porters are available to help carry your pack or assist if needed. If you take it slow and wear proper boots, most people can do it.
By road, it’s about 200–250 km and can take 6–8 hours total. From Kigali to Volcanoes NP is ~104 km (2–3 hours). Then from the border into Bwindi is a few more hours. We plan the trip so you arrive at Bwindi lodge on Day 1 and return to Kigali on Day 2 by evening.
Yes. The tour ends in Kigali, but you can add extra days. Many guests visit Queen Elizabeth NP or Lake Bunyonyi (Uganda) next. You could also tour around Rwanda (Kigali, Akagera National Park) before flying home. Our itinerary is flexible – let us know if you want more time, and we can arrange it.
We keep options open. For example, if flights allow, you might start in the afternoon of Day 1 and visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial before heading out. The tour ends on Day 2 after the trek, but you can decide to stay longer in Kampala/Entebbe or Rwanda. Let us know your plans and we can adjust timings.
You stay in clean, comfortable lodges or guesthouses in mountain villages (mid-range). Rooms have private bathrooms and hot showers. We can arrange single or double rooms. Lodging is chosen near the parks to minimize travel.
Speak to a travel doctor about malaria prevention. Bring any personal medicines. Drink boiled or bottled water. We provide boiled water for drinking. Bwindi is high and humid – rain gear is important.
Gorilla groups are limited to 8 people per hour. Your group may share the trek with others, but in Uganda each permit is for one person. We assign your group a gorilla family and a private tracker guide.
